Stat Attack: Nintendo overtakes Sony in worldwide software sales

Nintendo has won the hardware war, that much we knew already. So what’s the next benchmark in their plans for world domination? Why, software sales of course. Duh!

Analyst group iSuppli are reporting that Nintendo managed to gain $1.2 billion in worldwide revenue for the Wii and DS in this year’s third quarter. Elsewhere, Sony’s combined third-quarter revenue for the PS2, PS3 and the PSP games amounted to $1 billion, and Microsoft managed a comparatively paltry $317 million for their gaming software.

The reason for these results? iSuppli credits Nintendo with winning customer loyalty with their innovative and appealing range of software. The bad news for Sony, however, is that a “lack of compelling titles” has put a rather large dent into the PS3’s software sales. Sony is moving to fix this problem by trying to win over third-party game developers, but they’ve left it a bit late for this round.

But wait, there’s more good news for Nintendo. iSuppli expects Wii software revenue to reach $1.1 billion in next year’s fourth quarter. “Nintendo is likely to maintain its lead in this area, as it expects by the end of 2007 to ship about 200 additional titles.” All of which is another reason for you to call your stockbroker and tell him to invest everything you have - including your home, pension and children’s trust fund - in Nintendo shares.
